Waders, a wading fishing suit and fishing boots laid out on astro turf
We’ve bought a few waders and wading boots over the years. Even a full-on wading suit

A good pair of fishing waders should be waterproof, durable, comfortable, protective, breathable, functional, and easy to maintain. They should fit snugly and improve your fishing. So much so that you’ll look longingly at your lovely neoprene pantsuit in the summer months, desperate for those colder, wetter months. Much like the best fishing boots on the market.

Here we’ve reviewed the very best fishing waders on the market from the very best brands; Simms, Orvis, Caperlan and Patagonia to name but a few, to help you find the right pair of waders for your angling needs.

What’s on this page

What makes a good pair of fishing waders?

What makes a good pair of fishing waders depends on the type of fishing you’re doing and the prevailing weather conditions you’re fishing in. But there are some non-negotiables around material quality, abrasion resistance and waterproofing that you should be aware of;

  • Waterproof: When you’re fishing in rivers and streams all day, the waders you buy must be waterproof. It completely defeats their point if the material quality isn’t built to be long-lasting and keep you dry.
  • Durable: Durability is one of the more variable metrics you’ll come across and something that tends to set the top-of-the-range models apart. The waders you buy must be able to withstand the conditions you’re fishing in. The best models tend to have a reinforced lower section, improving puncture resistance without adding unnecessary weight.
  • Comfortable: Your waders really need to fit you well. They should be snug without being tight. This is particularly important when you’re spending long days in the water. Adjustable straps and waistbands are great features to look for here. As a general rule of thumb, neoprene waders are warmer and thicker, whilst breathable fabrics like gore-tex or nylon are less well-insulated but generally lighter and more comfortable.
  • Insulation: If you’re fishing in colder months, you’ll want to purchase waders that keep you warm. Typically neoprene offers the best bang for your buck when it comes to keeping you warm. Whereas gore-tex or nylon are better for summertime wading.
  • Functionality: There are several features that you should consider when purchasing a pair of waders, including; built-in boots, gravel guards, adjustable straps, pockets and fleece lining. All of which can make your fishing experience more pleasurable.
  • Abrasion-resistant: It’s a fact of life that your waders are going to be susceptible to snags, rips and punctures. So purchasing a pair that can withstand anything you throw at them is sensible. Look for pairs that have a reinforced lower half.
  • Maintenance: Like death and taxes, maintenance of anything is a necessary evil. But make sure you buy a pair of waders that can be cleaned with simple soap and water and avoid features that are prone to mould. Preferably look for a pair that comes with a repair kit.
  • Material quality: A no-brainer, but purchasing a pair of waders made with quality material will last longer and minimise your expenditure in the long run. Neoprene and gore-tex tend to be the most sought-after materials and look for reinforced lower sections to minimise punctures.

The 9 best fishing waders

1

Simms G4 Pro Stockingfoot WadersBest all-around waders

  • Breathable, reinforced gore-tex fabric waders
  • Three-layer upper half and four-layer lower half reinforced fabric
  • Lightweight, breathable and insulated

Simms G4 Pro Stockingfoot Waders are breathable, gore-tex-made waders perfect for any terrain, weather and type of fishing. Whilst they aren’t the best-insulated waders on the market, they are the best for variable weather conditions. The reinforced, lightweight layers of gore-tex provide excellent protection against the elements. The front and back leg seams are great for mobility with stockingfoot boots made for long days out in and on the water.

We particularly like the outstanding storage options and inner fleece lining. Particularly useful when the waders are not made from thick, purpose-built neoprene. Simm’s most durable pair of waders have had over 16,000 hours of field testingthat’s almost two years. Whilst these waders are suitable for saltwater use, it’s particularly important to maintain them properly after exposure to saltwater thanks to its corrosive nature.

Set Alert for Product: Fishing 4mm Neoprene Waders 900 Thermo – £169.99
  • Waterproof, cold-weather waders
  • 4mm thick neoprene

Caperlan’s Fishing 4MM Neoprene Waders 900 Thermo are some of the best cold-weather waders ever made. Particularly at this price. The chest-high style and 4mm thick neoprene material will keep you warm and bone dry in even the harshest conditions (so long as the water doesn’t go over chest height). The adjustable elastic straps make these waders a really comfortable option for all shapes and sizes too.

The waterproof front zip pocket is a really useful feature and the lower part of the waders has been reinforced with anti-abrasion sections to prevent scuffing and rips. Something that is part and parcel of fishing in waders.

3

Patagonia Men’s Swiftcurrent WadersBest premium waders

  • Waterproof, breathable single-seam constructed waders made from nylon and polyester
  • Waist-mounted EZ-Lock suspenders for waist and chest adjustable height options
  • Made from 100% recycled polyester microfibres

Patagonia’s Men’s Swiftcurrent Waders are the best waders on the market providing money is no object. Incredible fitting waders thanks to the 13 different size options, this Patagonia product is impressively comfortable. The waterproof, breathable material is fitted with waist-mounted, EZ-Lock suspenders for quick conversion from chest to waist height and are one of the only pair of waders on the market with chest and waist fitting options.

At just 1.3kg in weight, you’ll be forgiven for forgetting you’re wearing nothing at all. The multitude of pockets provides the best storage on the market too. As a brand, Patagonia is renowned for the care and attention it pays to the planet and these recycled, long-lasting waders are no different.

Set Alert for Product: Snowbee Prestige Stx Studded Felt Sole Chest Waders – £288.16
  • Waterproof, puncture-resistant waders
  • Unique, six-layer design for maximum breathability
  • Neoprene-lined boots with a studded felt sole

Snowbee’s Prestige STX Studded Felt Sole Chest Waders are chest-high waders fitted with heavy-duty, neoprene-lined PVC boots with a studded felt sole. Perfect for fishing in slippy streams, reservoirs and icy conditions. Both on the river and the bank. Snowbee’s new generation of waders is some of the best on the market, and are extremely well-suited to almost any weather conditions.

Snowbee’s new STX range is a step up from the ST (Soft Touch) range. The outer layer has what Snowbee defines as a ‘peach-skin’ finish. It’s slightly soft to the touch and is designed to minimise the rustling associated with typically polyester waders, so they’re excellent for stealthy fly fishing.

Set Alert for Product: Breathable Fishing Waders 500 Boots – £149.99
  • Waterproof, breathable waders
  • Reinforced, puncture and abrasion-resistant material below the shin
  • Four-layer breathable fabric

Caperlan’s Breathable Fishing Waders 500 Boots are waterproof, breathable waders that are best suited to slightly warmer conditions. Whilst they’re not as warm as neoprene-made waders, these are fantastic for the late spring, early autumn and summer months where the last thing you want is to be peeling off layers in the sweltering heat in an attempt to stay dry.

With excellent waterproofing and freedom of movement (they’re ultra-comfortable), and minimise perspiration and that intensely frustrating dampness you normally associate with rubberised boots. The boots themselves are lugged, which makes traipsing down a slippery stream significantly more stable. The layered nature of the fabric seems to prevent excess perspiration too.

  • Breathable, lightweight nylon waders
  • Opposing side-release buckles for chest and waist-conversion
  • 30K Waterproofness rating

Orvis Men’s Clearwater Waders are Orvis’s budget-friendly wading option that tread the line between insulation and breathability exceptionally well. Particularly at this price. That’s not to say these aren’t a very good pair of waders. They are. In fact, they’re much more suited to the everyday fisherman who doesn’t necessarily need incredible abrasion resistance or ultra-thick neoprene and fleece lining than other high-end Orvis waders.

These waders have very good storage options and excellent waterproofing, fit snugly and come with built-in booties that can be used solo or with external boots. These lightweight, nylon waders are perfect for summer sessions and have easy-access storage perfect for fly fishing.

7

Patagonia Swiftcurrent Ultralight Stockingfoot WadersBest waders for packing lights

  • Ultralight, packable waterproof waders
  • Just 1kg in weight and packs into a burrito-style bag
  • Durable, slimline anatomical fit booties

Patagonia’s Swiftcurrent Ultralight Stockingfoot Waders are the lightest, in our opinion most convenient waders on the market. If you’re looking for some lightweight, ultra-packable waders for everyday fishing then you can’t go far wrong with these. Like most Patagonia waders the single-seam construction makes for particularly free movement. Where the ultralight stands out is unsurprisingly the weight. Roughly half the weight of other comparable waders.

Whilst these waders are not the most durable in Patagonia’s range, they are designed for speed rather than strength if you catch our drift. It even packs away into a burrito-style bag, like a mac-in-a-sac, which is amazing for transportation. And the reinforced scuff guards do give some additional protection against the elements.

8

Patagonia Swiftcurrent Wading PantsBest boot-free waders

  • Waterproof, boot-free waders
  • Ultra-lightweight at just 1.01kg
  • Articulated legs; heavy-duty scuff guards at ankles and reinforced gravel-guards

Patagonia’s Swiftcurrent Wading Pants are a super versatile pair of wading pants ideal for summer days and shallow rivers. Perfect for travelling thanks to their incredibly lightweight nature. If you’re after a pair of boot-free waders, you can’t do much better.

We love the single-seam, articulated legs and gusseted crotch design, which prevents rubbing where cross seams usually meet. These tailored, regular-fit trousers have an adjustable waistband that is designed for quick changes and the detail that has gone into the little features really help these wading trousers stand out.

Generous storage thanks to the ample pockets (fitted with drain holes for good measure) and belt loops and bootlace hooks, there’s somewhere for all of your tools. And like other Patagonia waders, 68% of the fabric used is recycled.

  • Waterproof, thigh-high waders
  • Puncture-resistant reinforced PVC knees
  • Cleated soles

Caperlan’s Fishing PVC Waders 100 are some of the best-value waders on the market. At under £50, it’s hard to find many comparable pairs that are genuinely waterproof, durable and reasonably comfortable.

They don’t come complete with all the mod-cons – no front pocket storage, limited puncture resistance below the shin, limited insulation and the soles aren’t lugged – but that’s not what or who these waders are for. They’re a straightforward entry-level pair of waterproof waders that will absolutely do the job.

Simms Tributary Stockingfoot Waders are waterproof, durable and breathable waders made by one of the world’s most well-known fly fishing and wading brands. Simms. The three-layer upper and four-layer lower design makes for a more flexible, lighter-weight upper half and an abrasion and scuff-resistant bottom.

The lean and smart design is great for natural mobility and long days out on (and in) the bank. Our favourite feature – the fleece-lined hand warmer – is some seriously welcome relief on the coldest of days.

Patagonia Swiftcurrent Expedition Zip-Front Waders

Patagonia’s Swiftcurrent Expedition Zip-Front Waders are Patagonia’s most feature-rich pair of award-winning waders designed for long trips where anything and everything can get thrown at you. The waterproofing has been stress-tested incredibly effectively and the adjustable straps and quick-release fastenings are superb for changing weather conditions and year-round angling.

The ankle scuff guards and removable foam kneepads are comfortable and really supportive when it comes to abrasion and puncture resistance. When combined with the anatomical booties, gusseted crotch and single-seam build, the freedom of movement is about as good as it gets. Any pair of waders that utilise single-seam instead of multiple provides a much more comfortable experience.

With 68% of the fabrics made with recycled materials, Patagonia’s Expedition Waders are the most consciously made pair on the market.

Orvis Pro Zip Bootfoot Waders

Orvis Pro Bootfoot Waders are the most durable, suitable for absolutely anything you could possibly throw at them waders on the market. Truly these are adventure waders. They’re not your everyday fly or carp fishing waders to wear down to the local river. Although of course, they’re more than capable of that. They’re designed for extreme fishermen.

These waders have been stress-tested for over 200 days in tough conditions to ensure the fittings and fastenings don’t degrade or fail when it comes to waterproofing. With a classic reinforced lower design and 5mm thick neoprene, the puncture and abrasion resistance is through the roof. Allegedly twice as much as comparable waders. The fleece-lined inner and 5mm thick neoprene mean the cooler the weather, the more these waders shine.

Shakespeare’s Sigma Neoprene Waterproof Chest Waders are fantastic fitting waders comfortable enough to walk substantial distances in. The built-in cleated boots are really convenient and – for relatively slim blokes – these waders fit really well. If you’re a slightly larger gent, then we’d recommend buying a size larger.

The 4mm neoprene material is pretty durable, particularly at under £100. Whilst they aren’t great in warmer conditions (again, thanks to the thick-ish neoprene) these waders are fantastic in the cold. The boots have built-in neoprene socks which are great in the cold but also make it worth buying a size larger.

Simms’ Freestone Stockingfoot Waders are durable, breathable stockingfoot waders designed with an articulated fit that promotes free movement. Very comfortable and well-insulated, these waders are made for long, arduous trips.

The fleece-lined handwarmer pocket is particularly snug and the two additional pockets – a chest pocket for additional tool storage and a dedicated fly patch – mean these waders are tremendous for fly fishing.

Orvis Men’s Pro Waders

Orvis Men’s Pro Waders are a market-leading pair of waterproof, extreme fishing waders designed for any conditions. Whether you’re fly fishing in Patagonia or lure fishing from the shore in Cornwall, these waders can do it all. The super durable material, manufacturing spec and reinforced lower portion make any rips or tears unlikely. The streamlined gravel guard provides extra protection against wear and tear.

With an athletic fit, removable knee pads and chest and waist-high options, Orvis’ waders are designed for comfort. With a gusseted crotch that enables freer movement, they may be the most comfortable waders on the market.

Snowbee’s Prestige Breathable Trousers are boot-free waders that come in more of a fitted style than typical waders. The high-waist and high-brace setup is comfortable, adjustable and excellent for fishing in streams, reservoirs, rivers and boats. A truly excellent pair of over-trousers.

The reinforced knee and bum pads mean that sitting in boats or on the bank is no longer wildly uncomfortable. And the waterproof ankle gussets and on/off over boots – our favourite feature – are so convenient. There’s nothing worse than being in and out of waders all day and the versatility these waders offer is second to none.

When it comes to waterproofing, the inner-waterproof gusset (one of the least sexy terms around) and 600D reinforced fabric ensure you stay dry all day. In almost any conditions. If you’re looking for waders with built-in boots, then we recommend trying Snowbee Prestige STX Studded Felt Sole Chest Waders.

Vass’s Hybrid 700 Wader combines the tougher Vass-Tex 700 material on the lower section with the lightweight Vass-Tex 350 material upper. This is designed to increase puncture and abrasion resistance on your lower half (where wear and tear is more commonplace) without increasing excess weight. It’s a smart design and the Vass welded seams and the material itself are at the more durable end of the market. Particularly at this price.

The durable, built-in Vass boots are equally impressive when it comes to durability. Whilst they aren’t the very best pair of waders on the market, they are excellent value. Perfect for particularly harsh conditions.

FAQs

How do I choose a pair of fishing waders?

When choosing a pair of fishing waders, you need to consider the type of material the waders are made from (typically neoprene, rubber or breathable gore-tex), the style of waders (chest or thigh-high), fit and size, features (think storage, reinforced knees and built-in gravel guards) and price.

If you’re fishing in the winter months you’d want to consider purchasing chest-high neoprene or rubberised waders for the insulation properties. Potentially with fleece-lined pockets.

What is the best fishing wader material?

The best fishing wader material tends to be defined by the type of fishing you’re doing and the conditions you’re fishing in. For example, neoprene is waterproof, insulated and rip-resistant, which tends to be ideal for spending all day fishing in colder, wetter months. Whereas breathable fabric like gore-tex tends to be better for fishing in warmer climates.

What is the most durable wader?

Are neoprene waders better than PVC?

Neoprene waders are better than PVC waders because they provide better insulation than PVC-made waders, tend to be more flexible and comfortable (ideal for long days out), conforming to your body shape and just fit more effectively.

Neoprene is also a more durable material than PVC, tearing less frequently and lasting longer, whilst being slightly more breathable. They allow a little more circulation.

Who makes the toughest waders?

There are several brands you have years of experience making extremely durable, abrasion-resistant waders that are designed to withstand the toughest conditions. Simms, Patagonia, Orvis, Vass and Caperlan are all well-established in the wading market, making excellent quality, highly durable waders.

How many years do waders last?

Typically a quality pair of waders should last for 10 years or more. Of course, this is extremely dependent on the amount of use you get out of them, the quality and overall durability of the waders, and how well you clean, maintain and store them. Particularly if you’re fishing in saltwater conditions.

Should you buy waders a size bigger?

It’s generally not recommended to buy waders a size bigger. Whilst it’s recommended to use a pair of waders that fit snugly, from personal experience, the tighter the fit, the warmer you are and the less chance of snags and rips. It can also cause excess rubbing and general discomfort.

A lot of waders will come with adjustable straps and allow for additional layers without added discomfort. So if you’re fishing in colder conditions, purchasing adjustable waders that can accommodate extra layers is a good idea.

Are nylon or neoprene waders better?

This really depends on the type of fishing you’re doing and the prevailing conditions you’re fishing in. Neoprene waders are thicker and more durable than nylon waders, making them a better option for fishing in colder conditions. Wheres nylon waders are generally more comfortable and lighter weight, making them a better option for fishing in warmer, less harsh conditions.
