A good pair of fishing boots can be an essential piece of kit for both sea and coarse fishermen. Long days and cold nights out on the bank can be an unforgiving place to be particularly when the rain and wind set in. Having been in some particularly miserable conditions across the UK’s south coast (Devon’s best sea fishing locations have thrown up some serious weather) and the Beara Peninsula, we know a thing or two about the value of good fishing boots. They’ve saved our bacon a number of times.

What fishing boots do we currently use?
Typically we have a pair of waterproof boots (waders, wading boots and such), a pair of comfortable, grippier hiking boots designed for traversing tougher ground and barefoot shoes for fishing in warmer weather and more pleasant ground. Right now, a pair of Quecha boots from Decathlon, Vivo Barefoots, Simms Waders and some Patagonia wading boots.
Warmer fur-lined boots are essential for fishing in the winter months, but clearly unsuitable for the summer. Obviously, waterproof boots or waders are an obvious sell, but barefoot shoes are not for everyone. In our opinion, they’re the most comfortable shoes ever made and perfect for fishing in warmer months and on slightly more forgiving terrain.
What makes a good pair of fishing boots?
In essence, a good pair of fishing boots combines waterproofing (or resistance), durability, comfort, and practicality to ensure your feet stay warm, dry, comfortable and supported. Or at least three of the four.
- Waterproof or water-resistant: Surprisingly, fishing often involves being around water, mud, and wet environments. A pair of boots that are waterproof or water-resistant will keep your feet and socks dry and comfortable, even in damp conditions.
- Durability: Fishing boots should be built to withstand rugged terrains, rocky shores, and potential encounters with sharp objects. Durable materials and reinforced construction are essential for longevity. Think reinforced rubber, toe caps and thick felt soles.
- Traction: A slip-resistant and grippy sole is crucial for maintaining stability on slippery surfaces such as wet rocks, weedy shores, boat decks, and muddy trails.
- Comfort: Cushioned insoles, proper arch support, and breathable materials contribute to a comfortable angling experience. For us, that’s why it’s worth spending a bit more than average.
- Insulation (optional): Depending on the fishing conditions and climate, insulation might be necessary to keep your feet warm in colder weather or cooler waters.
- Fit and Sizing: Boots that fit well prevent blisters and discomfort. Look for adjustable features like laces or tightening wheels and straps to ensure a snug fit.
- Ankle Support: Fishing boots with good ankle support help prevent injuries, especially when navigating uneven terrain or rocky shorelines.
- Quick Drying: Boots that dry quickly are ideal, as they prevent moisture buildup and keep your feet comfortable throughout the day. It can also help prevent odour build-up and nothing stinks quite like a pair of wet fishing boots.

Made with corrosion-resistance materials, the laces and mesh material can manage both fresh and saltwater – but make sure to clean the boots appropriately if you’re fishing in the sea.

If you’re a wider-footed fisherman, then this shoe really comes into its own. Whilst it isn’t the best in terms of managing all-terrains and treacherously slippy fishing trips, it is a fantastic all-around boot.
