What does our lure box setup look like?

It really depends on what fishing we are doing. Lure fishing for bass typically demands a number of surface and slightly sub-surface lures around the 20-30g mark. Pollock need larger, sinking lures to reach them in the briny depths. And lure fishing for pike has an even wider variety of lures – sometimes up to the 150g mark.

Ultimately what you need in your lure box is lures in a variety of sizes, colours and actions with enough of each style to cater for lure losses. That may be that a small, one-sided lure box is more than enough, or a large two-sided one may be required.

We like to separate our tackle boxes into the type of fishing we’re doing. With the exception of one or two large backup boxes, we tend to segment our lure fishing boxes up by the type of fishing we are doing.

What makes a good lure box?

A good lure box (or lure box set) should make storing your lures at home and on the go simple and effective. When looking for a new lure box, make sure it is;

  • Waterproof and watertight
  • Customisable – ideally the storage solution should come with dividers and multi-sized lure boxes/compartments
  • Fits multi-sized lures
  • Have space for essential terminal tackle
  • Rust-proof (although this is rare)

  • Dimensions: 39cm x 28cm x 12.5cm
  • A two-story lure box large enough to hold dozens of multi-sized lures and their accessories without being too bulky
  • Waterproof and watertight
  • The divider system is excellent for storing multiple-sized lures and accessories

Savage Gear’s Lure Specialist Tackle Box is a large, spectacularly durable lure box complete with two storage levels and removable dividers so you can split lures, clips and other accessories up effectively.

It fits neatly into almost any lure shoulder bag or smaller rucksack and the plastic itself is both waterproof and watertight thanks to the solid plastic clips. The tiers are connected by entirely separate twin catches, so if you open one the other won’t automatically spew everything onto the ground.

  • Dimensions: 29.5cm x 20.5cm x 6.2cm
  • Another excellent waterproof and watertight lure box designed for on-the-go anglers
  • Can fit lures up to 14.5cm with removable dividers to fit larger lures

Savage Gear’s Two-Sided Lure Box is another excellent value lure box from Savage Gear that is waterproof, watertight and travel-friendly, fitting perfectly into sling bags or rucksacks. The plastic clips and hinges are pretty durable, even in saltwater environments. This is what makes these lure boxes so good for saltwater lure fishing.

From personal experience, we love using these Savage Gear lure boxes and recommend purchasing two or more, splitting your lures up into types of fishing – for bass or pollock – or by size. This makes the admin side of fishing much less frustrating.

You can also purchase a short version of the product, which is around 25% smaller and perfect for light lure fishing or when storage is minimal. The only downside is it can only fit lures up to 13cm at a push.

HTO Soft Plastic and Jig Head BoxBest lure box for soft plastics

Best value
HTO Soft Plastic and Jig Head Box
  • The foam-covered bottom is ideal for storing jig heads
  • Dimensions: 27cm x 18cm x 5cm
  • Four longer compartments are specifically designed to store soft plastic bodies
POSITIVES
  • Perfect for soft plastics and jig heads
  • Waterproof and watertight
  • Excellent value
NEGATIVES
  • Can’t house larger lures and is not designed to be an all-encompassing tackle box

HTO’s Soft Plastic and Jig Head Box is the perfect lure box when it comes to storing soft plastics. The four compartment’s length and depth are specifically designed to house soft plastic bodies and the foam-covered square compartment lets you house the jig heads away from the soft plastics. This discourages any lure and lure box damage.

The rubber seal around the lid and three clamps around the side and front make the lure box the most watertight on the market. A really excellent purchase for the money and particularly good for winter angling and the associated tougher conditions.

Having a lure box that contains both soft plastics and hard lures does cause potentially significant wear and tear to the softer bodies, so it’s wise to split them up.

  • Dimensions: 37.8cm x 29.5cm x 18.1cm
  • A lure storage system for the serious angler
  • Perfect for storing all manner of lures and accessories at home with multiple storage compartments and glide trays
  • Waterproof and watertight with a corrosion-resistant vapour designed to protect your hard and metal lures

Flambeau’s Waterproof Satchel Series is the best lure box for at-home lure and terminal tackle storage. The lure box is made up of six customisable compartments including two fold-out swivel trays, two removable WP3012 boxes (included) and two built-in trays. There’s no other box that allows for such efficient storage and it’s not too large to take with you on long-distance trips.

The plastic itself is thicker than your average lure box and is entirely waterproof and watertight thanks to a rubber sealant and airtight clamp solution. The dividers are made with patented Zerust corrosion-resistant technology. A packaging material that releases an invisible, odourless and non-toxic corrosion-inhibiting vapour into the air that interrupts the electrochemical corrosion process commonly associated with hard lures and metals.

There’s an even larger version of this superb lure box for the serious angler. Although that one we couldn’t recommend for travelling anglers.

  • An excellent value, all-round lure box
  • The larger deep partitions are ideal for larger lures, whilst the flip tops and segmented smaller compartments are excellent for tackle and mico-lures
  • Waterproof and watertight with up to 16 different storage options

Fox’s Deluxe F-Box Series is a truly excellent multi-compartment lure box that’s efficient at housing larger lures of around 14.5cm to micro-lures of 3cm and below. There are three medium-sized lure compartments, one larger one and a few dividers to help you efficiently store whatever hard lure, jig head or soft plastic you have in mind.

When it comes to terminal tackle there are also two individual flip-top compartments and two additional trays – a mini eight tray and a small four tray – that are excellent for swivels, beads, hooks and lure clips. If you’re anything like us, the appeal of an ultra-organised storage solution like this will really whet your whistle.

There are also a Fox Deluxe Large version and a Fox Deluxe Double Large version for those looking for the all-encompassing tackle solution.

Set Alert for Product: 4-drawer Fishing Box Bx 4 D 24.4 L – £59.99
  • Dimensions of the entire product: 40cm x 40cm x 30cm
  • A four-storey lockable lure box, with great lure storage and multiple-sized boxes
  • Lockable – great for storing more valuable tackle
  • Not suitable for lighter lure fishing or for less accessible locations

Caperlan’s 4 Drawer Fishing Box is an excellent value lure box that comes complete with four multi-size trays, an additional top compartment and locking clips, making it the most secure fishing box on the market.

The top compartment is the largest of the lot and is typically used to store terminal tackle, whilst the four trays are better suited for lure storage and transportation. The multi-tray style makes it suitable for segmenting lures by fishing type or by lure – soft plastics, hard metals, micro-lures etc – to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

Thanks to Decathlon’s stance on eco-design the product is also made with 41% recycled plastic.

  • Dimensions: 70cm x 35cm x 35.5cm
  • Premium quality lure storage that can support up to 100 lures of 22.5cm in length
  • Patented Zerust technology to prevent lure corrosion – ideal for premium quality lure storage
  • Best large lure storage solution on the market with space for up to 100 large lures at 22.5cm hanging storage

Flambeau Maximiser Large Lure Box is the best quality large lure storage solution on the market. Large lures can be particularly expensive and tricky to store, so being able to store up to 100 in a space-saving manner is fantastic.

The Zerust anti-corrosion technology is also a must when it comes to protecting higher-value lures. As long as you rinse your saltwater lures after use, storing them in Flambeau’s large lure box will make them last longer and stay sharper than otherwise. It’s really a storage and maintenance option.

FAQs

How do I store my lures?

The best way to store lures is to use a lure box or tackle box. These plastic-made storage products are designed to hold lures and terminal tackle, preventing lures from taking up too much space and getting stuck to things.

We recommend splitting your lures up by lure type (soft plastic, hard metals etc) to prevent unnecessary damage and tangling.
