What does our lure box setup look like?
It really depends on what fishing we are doing. Lure fishing for bass typically demands a number of surface and slightly sub-surface lures around the 20-30g mark. Pollock need larger, sinking lures to reach them in the briny depths. And lure fishing for pike has an even wider variety of lures – sometimes up to the 150g mark.
Ultimately what you need in your lure box is lures in a variety of sizes, colours and actions with enough of each style to cater for lure losses. That may be that a small, one-sided lure box is more than enough, or a large two-sided one may be required.
We like to separate our tackle boxes into the type of fishing we’re doing. With the exception of one or two large backup boxes, we tend to segment our lure fishing boxes up by the type of fishing we are doing.
What makes a good lure box?
A good lure box (or lure box set) should make storing your lures at home and on the go simple and effective. When looking for a new lure box, make sure it is;
- Waterproof and watertight
- Customisable – ideally the storage solution should come with dividers and multi-sized lure boxes/compartments
- Fits multi-sized lures
- Have space for essential terminal tackle
- Rust-proof (although this is rare)

- Dimensions: 29.5cm x 20.5cm x 6.2cm
- Another excellent waterproof and watertight lure box designed for on-the-go anglers
- Can fit lures up to 14.5cm with removable dividers to fit larger lures
Savage Gear’s Two-Sided Lure Box is another excellent value lure box from Savage Gear that is waterproof, watertight and travel-friendly, fitting perfectly into sling bags or rucksacks. The plastic clips and hinges are pretty durable, even in saltwater environments. This is what makes these lure boxes so good for saltwater lure fishing.
From personal experience, we love using these Savage Gear lure boxes and recommend purchasing two or more, splitting your lures up into types of fishing – for bass or pollock – or by size. This makes the admin side of fishing much less frustrating.
You can also purchase a short version of the product, which is around 25% smaller and perfect for light lure fishing or when storage is minimal. The only downside is it can only fit lures up to 13cm at a push.
HTO Soft Plastic and Jig Head BoxBest lure box for soft plastics
- The foam-covered bottom is ideal for storing jig heads
- Dimensions: 27cm x 18cm x 5cm
- Four longer compartments are specifically designed to store soft plastic bodies
- Perfect for soft plastics and jig heads
- Waterproof and watertight
- Excellent value
- Can’t house larger lures and is not designed to be an all-encompassing tackle box
HTO’s Soft Plastic and Jig Head Box is the perfect lure box when it comes to storing soft plastics. The four compartment’s length and depth are specifically designed to house soft plastic bodies and the foam-covered square compartment lets you house the jig heads away from the soft plastics. This discourages any lure and lure box damage.
The rubber seal around the lid and three clamps around the side and front make the lure box the most watertight on the market. A really excellent purchase for the money and particularly good for winter angling and the associated tougher conditions.
Having a lure box that contains both soft plastics and hard lures does cause potentially significant wear and tear to the softer bodies, so it’s wise to split them up.

FAQs
The best way to store lures is to use a lure box or tackle box. These plastic-made storage products are designed to hold lures and terminal tackle, preventing lures from taking up too much space and getting stuck to things.
We recommend splitting your lures up by lure type (soft plastic, hard metals etc) to prevent unnecessary damage and tangling.
To store big lures you’ll need to purchase a big lure box. These larger lure boxes can normally store lures of up to 20cm at their largest and some have greater flexibility when it comes to the use of dividers. Removing them can help you store really substantial lures. Something like Flambeau The Maximizer Large Tackle Chest is an excellent large lure option.
The best way to keep lures from tangling is to store them neatly, taking care to avoid placing treble hooks next to treble hooks. If you have a hard lure box, try to keep lures of the same size together, align them the same way and – if possible – tie the hooks together with an elastic band or twist ties.
Yes you can put soft plastics in a lure box. Lure boxes are the most efficient, cost effective and waterproof way to store any type of lure.
However you should try to avoid putting soft plastics in with hard lures and treble hooks as soft plastics are – by their very nature – soft and easily damaged. To make sure they last as long as possible store them with other soft plastics.
