Shimano Stradic FL
The Shimano Stradic FL is an ultra-lightweight, powerful little reel that’s perfect for on-the-go fishing. With a gear ratio of 6.4:1 it’s one of if not the highest on the market and is brilliant for fishing in conditions when the first 10 feet are essential. Particularly for something like pollock fishing.

Description
The Shimano Stradic has had a reputation for being one of the very best reels on the market. It’s always been smooth, reliable and – for the cost – almost impeccable quality. And the newer FL version (successor to the FK model) has increased smoothness, gear strength and casting distance.
Although the reel isn’t actually designed for the saltwater market it is both sealed and extremely reliable. It’s unequivocally one of the best saltwater spinning reels on the market. The 20lb drag and high gear ratio (bettered only by the Revo SX and at least matching Penn’s Spinfisher) belies the reel’s paltry 225g weight. Upgrades to this model include improved waterproof drag and the Micro Module Gear II system designed for a smoother gearing process.
Whilst its ultra-lightweight nature may not be suitable for targeting serious fish – the Penn Slammer IV may be more appropriate – it is equally at home finesse fishing for trout on smaller rivers as it is targeting inshore bass. All of the above combine to make a high-spec, good-value salt-resistant reel.

FAQs
The Shimano Stradic FL is a very good reel, capable of coping with serious fish in tough conditions. Its lightweight nature and very good drag for the weight make this a reel jack of all trades, but in a good way. It isn’t suitable for targeting the very biggest fish, but is an excellent step or two up from your entry level models.
Shimano is a Japanese brand through and through and – contrary to popular belief – these reels are made at the company’s headquarters in Sakai, Japan, not the USA.
Depending on the size of reel you get, the Shimano Stradic FL’s braid capacity is: 200yd/10lb 140yd/20lb 105yd/40lb. The thicker your braid, the less line can be held by the reel and vice versa.
The Shimano Stradic FL has a gear ratio of between 5.1:1 all the way up to 6.4:1. Designed to handle fast, reasonably powerful fish, is relatively lightweight nature and max drag of between 20-24lb are all specs you’d expect of such a high-quality spinning reel.
